The heat getting too intense for you to enjoy the outdoors? Head indoors for these fun activities for the whole family!

Singapore has many parks and green spaces for residents to experience the great outdoors. However, one of the drawbacks of living on this tropical island is that the weather can get pretty hot (and unpredictable), but that’s no reason to limit your fun! There are many indoor activities you can do to bond with the whole family — the trick is choosing which ones to do.

Here’s a suggestion: Have each family member write down activities they want to do on a piece of paper, and drop them in a “lucky draw” jar or box. Whichever activity is chosen is what you do at the next family day.

We’ve come up with a few activities that you might want to try:

Go bowling

Bowling guarantees hours of fun and laughter for the whole family — even for young kids and seniors. Up the fun factor by dividing the fam into teams for an afternoon of friendly competition.

Singapore Bowling@Rifle Range in Temasek Club has 38 bowling lanes and bumper lanes for children (7 years old and below) who don’t know yet how to bowl. Want music and trippy lights to go with your strikes and spares? Head to Cosmic Bowling at K Bowling, which also has darts and an arcade for everyone to enjoy!

Try a different kind of gardening

Terrariums are perfect for Singapore because they’re designed for small spaces. Get your family together for a fun and educational activity — create your own terrariums and learn all about how to grow and maintain succulents. A basic terrarium workshop for a family of four at The Green Capsule starts at $99. Other workshops can be booked on an individual basis.

The Green Capsule, Great World City, 1 Kim Seng Promenade, #02-143, Singapore 237994; Tel 98769884; Book here

Learn a craft

Want to learn a new skill, create something beautiful and bond with family? Try a tufting workshop. Tufting is a type of textile weaving where threads are inserted on a base. Short U-shaped loops of extra yarn are introduced through the fabric from the outside so their ends point inwards. An example of tufting would be carpets, but it’s a technique that can also be used to make bags or a piece of art.

Anna Craft Creative, 7 Soon Lee Street #05-11, Ispace, Singapore 627608; WhatsApp 9771 4217 for bookings

Make messy art

In the mood to create something unique? Bring your family to a splatter art class. In this unique painting workshop, participants don’t need to know how to paint figures or recognisable images. All workshoppers need is their imagination, some paint and a canvas to splatter them on. Even your clothes and the walls are fair game in this fun — and messy — art class.

Catch a show

Singapore has a vibrant homegrown theatre scene and now is the time to catch up on what’s on offer. For something historical, watch the immersive Four Horse Road, which is based on real events that happened on Bras Basah Road. The audience gets in on the act by physically following six routes across two heritage shophouses where they’ll get to know characters from two time periods. It’s a show that blends different genres, from slapstick to crime fiction — even suspense.

If magic and death-defying stunts are more your family’s taste, then they’ll enjoy Cosentino: Decennium – The Greatest Live Magic Show, which has all this, plus mind-boggling stage illusions, street magic along with signature dance and magic acts.

Four Horse Road, 4 August to 3 September 2023, The Theatre Practice, 54 Waterloo St. Singapore 187953; tickets from $75. Book here
Cosentino: Decennium – The Greatest Live Magic Show, 24 August – 3 September 2023, Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, B1, 4 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018973; tickets from $58. Book here
